DOUGHNOTTS PUT THEIR STAMP ON BIRMINGHAM’S BULLRING SHOPPING MALL
Established in 2015, Doughnotts are a growing company providing delicious handmade doughnuts across the Midlands.
Having made their beginnings with pop up marquees in their home town of Nottingham, Doughnotts have since established several permanent kiosks.
For their most recent expansion, Doughnotts reached out to John E Wright & Co with a simple brief: design and install a bespoke kiosk for an empty 6m x 3m space, in the upper mall of Bullring Shopping Centre.
Having already worked with us on several occasions, Doughnotts were confident that John E Wright would exceed their expectations.
OUR BESPOKE SOLUTIONS
The designed kiosk had to consist of a large enough counter to span the entire front of the shop. It had to have enough space for staff to move around in, whilst also housing a stock area for their doughnut catering racks.
Furthermore, it required an operational water and electric supply for a fridge, sink basin and illuminated signs – all contained within a 6m x 3m floor space. We had to balance our customers brand and vision with the shopping centre’s criteria and guidelines. Our first challenge was to acquire planning permission.
Our design had to include fire retardant materials and a lower countertop for wheelchair access. We met all these elements promptly, with our experienced in-house design team creating 3D renders to quickly visualise all the details the design needed. As per our brief, the kiosk had to have some form of illumination to each side.
We incorporated three 3D Illuminated logos to the sides, as well as a 2m tall front lit totem.

Additionally, a swing door entrance and ramp was built in to allow entrance for mobile catering racks. The body of the kiosk was cladded in wood slats, backed with acoustic felt – this gave this design the edge our client desired.
The front elevation of the kiosk consists of two counters, manufactured from aluminium profile and powder coated in black. These counters included 6mm toughened glass shelves, to properly display all of Doughnott’s products.
The entire kiosk was supported by large floor bearers, with fire rated boards and a non-slip safety floor covering. Finally, all worktops were laminated for easy cleaning. One of the challenges we faced was the installation itself. Due to the location of the kiosk, it had to be completed overnight. The customer was opening to the public the same morning of our final install date, adding to the pressure. To maintain an efficient and timely workflow, we had to thoroughly manage each aspect of the build.
We are pleased to say that the build was completed ahead of time, giving our customer more time to set up for their successful grand opening.
