Raleigh bikes are a beloved part of British history, from the iconic Raleigh Chopper racing the streets of 1970s Britain, to the innovative electric biking solutions driving a revolution in modern travel.
John E Wright & Co is honored to have become part of Raleigh’s history when they approached us to refurbish their entire Nottingham store, located on Maid Marian Way near the historic Nottingham Castle.
Our job was to create the Raleigh Experience – part retail, part museum – and a celebration of Raleigh’s entire story; past, present and future. We were tasked with a complete rejuvenation of the space, measuring 5000 sq ft. Our role covered all aspects of the job, from beginning to end: from design and 3D renders to graphics, signage and installation.
Despite the scope of the project, we took it on with confidence, enthusiasm, and innovative ideas.
Our Solution to Every Challenge
The initial challenge of this project was the sheer size of it –with around 5000 sq ft of shop floor to design as well as two outside fascia signs, it would be a momentous task. To achieve this, John E Wright & Co brought all their effort and dedication to the project, directing the entire process from concept to completion with detailed oversight and confident management.
We created a fresh and modern design open and inviting to customers, with distinctive signage to entice the curiosity of any passer-by. For this project we designed and created: forty plinths made in 18mm laminated MDF and solid timber, eleven bespoke wall graphics, three tension framed lightboxes, a 5m x 4m floor graphic of the iconic Raleigh Heron, and two vinyl-wrapped fascia signs.
Of particular challenge was the graphic for the large back wall of the space. The previous wall in place was uneven, and counterintuitive to the modern design we aimed to create. Our solution to this was to utilise our bespoke fabric tension framing, attached to a stud timber wall. Our tension frames are designed with flexibility in mind, allowing an easy installation that results in an even and elegant surface. At 30m x 3m, this singular frame took intense planning and thoughtful execution – but with our experience, we successfully achieved this to our high standard of quality.
An Interior and Exterior Facelift
The two outside fascia signs were of great importance to the design of Raleigh Experience. After all, they would be the first thing any customer would see. However, they also came with challenges: the main sign would measure in at an extraordinary 25m long, with a second elevated sign measuring in at 6m. Both were wrapped in high-quality polymeric vinyl, proudly displaying Raleigh branding. The elevated sign brought its own unique challenges too, requiring scaffolding to safely access. Due to the location of the shop on the busy street of Maid Marian Way, this required us to gain permits from the city council to barrier off the area and use the correct access equipment.
Many large-scale projects come with equally large-scale challenges. However, John E Wright & Co pride ourselves on finding innovative and smart solutions with a high quality of finish and execution.
