The University of Derby (UoD) is a bustling and exciting place, with a student body including over 15,000 undergraduates. As part of their drives to bring in new students, the university operates several open days.
These allow prospective students to explore the facilities the university has to offer, as well as meet with course tutors and fellow students. For any university, a well-planned and confident showing on open days is the best way to attract new students.
In 2021, the University of Derby launched the Make It Real campaign to encourage prospective students that Derby is right for them. The Make it Real campaign aimed to not only introduce visitors to university life, but to also highlight the opportunities higher education can open up through the inspiring stories of UoD alumni.
For this campaign, the university contracted John E Wright & Co to manufacture and install bespoke made graphics. Our brief was to make a strong visual impact on new and prospective students.
The Challenges and Our Solutions
To fulfil our brief, John E Wright & Co created several specially made graphic solutions. The main challenge of this job was the installation of several different types of branded graphics. These included seven hanging banners, each measuring 1.5m x 4m.
We also produced vinyl graphics to display on walls throughout the premises, as well as the doors of twelve lifts over University of Derby’s six campuses – all displaying the Make It Real campaign’s bright and distinctive branding. We utilised our bespoke tension frame technology to set-up gigantic custom mesh PVC graphics.
These frames went over windows, but allowed light to pass through. This clever solution creates one-way vision for anyone inside the building, while still displaying the printed graphic to anyone outside. In total, three of these were made, including an enormous 10.3m x 5m frame for the external wall of the Kedleston road campus.
Finally, we installed a profile cut aluminium University of Derby logo, measuring 4m x 4m. This was mounted directly onto brickwork with the careful hands of our experienced team. Several railing banners were produced, to hang in the main reception of the Keddleston Road campus building. This job required specialist access equipment to achieve safe access to elevated areas. John E Wright & Co prides itself on maintaining a safe working environment, and worked to ensure we had all necessary procedures and permits in place for successful completion of this job.
We are honoured to have played a part in the success of the Make It Real campaign, and wish all the new students joining the University of Derby student body well.
